In the recent past there has been a lot of buzz circulating in regard to the surviving potential of our beloved soap. Last week soap fans got a hint of good news and a glimmer of hope for the future of General Hospital. After the cancellation of two iconic soap operas, All My Children and One Life to Live, General Hospital fans have been on pins and needles waiting to hear of the fate of their favorite show. It was brought to our attention that The Revolution, the been-there, done-that, nobody-cares about- talk show that Daytime watchers have absolutely no interest in, hasn’t done as well as TPTB had hoped. The ratings are hardly what was expected and the show’s chances for renewal are very slim. This makes a soap fan like me grin from ear to ear. It’s been said that the Daytime audience is changing with the times, and that shows like The Revolution would appeal to a larger audience. I just don’t see it. Simple as that. We don’t want another reality show, or food show, or another round table type. We want our soaps! Soaps are not only for the stay at home mom, or the retired woman. They appeal to a wide range audience including working women, moms, teens, college students, and men! Have these executives not heard of DVR? Yes I am a stay at home mom, but I want to watch GH in peace and quiet. I don’t watch it at 3 PM, I use the benefits of technology and set my DVR to record General Hospital every single day and I watch it at night or catch up later in the week. Soap fans are very loyal and no matter what type of lifestyle changes occur, such as a new job, becoming a mom, or taking some classes, with DVR we are still able to devote and hour to our soap. Soap Operas are not only classic and legendary, but an iconic feature in our society, and still manage to remain topics of conversation in many different scenarios. I was recently watching a movie called The Sitter, starring Jonah Hill. In one of the scenes he was sitting on the couch watching TV. General Hospital was on and it was a clip of Jason and Franco! I feel that GH appeals to so many varieties of fans and has a huge following of younger women in high school and in college, and young moms. GH has a HUGE following on Twitter and Facebook. Many times between 3pm and 4pm Eastern-standard time, General Hospital references have trended in the US. How can they say this soap is slipping? Everyone I talk to watches this show. Girls my age, their moms, their Grandmas, and their sisters. I grew up watching General Hospital with my Mom, so now I am passing the tradition on with my daughter. She is 3 1/2 and knows all the characters. For me, the GH flame still burns bright and I know all of us fans have the flame inside of us burning bright for this legendary piece of entertainment. So please, support our show, keep watching, keep it alive, and let’s pass it on to our kids for years to come.
Rebecca Herbst Renews Her Contract!
I am happy to learn that Rebecca Herbst will be staying on GH as she just renewed her contract! Elizabeth Webber is a much loved character in PC. I hope there is a lot in store for her character for the years to come. Elizabeth Webber stays in Port Charles!
