Maurice Benard joined the cast of General Hospital in August of 1993 as Michael Sonny Corinthos. He has been a fan favorite and front and center for over tow- almost three decades. Some would say that General Hospital would not be what it is today without the character of Sonny Corinthos and the amazingly talented actor, Maurice Benard, who portrays him. There is some recent General Hospital news that has fans worried about the future of their favorite character, Sonny Corinthos. For a few months now General Hospital rumors have been indicating that Maurice Benard will be taking 6 months off of General Hospital as Port Charles’ most popular mob boss, Sonny Corinthos.
In the newest edition of ABC Soaps in Depth Magazine, the September 29th issue, it has been revealed that Maurice Benard’s contract is due to be up very soon and the actor has not yet re-signed. Benard is considering leaving GH to work on other projects. The actor told Soaps in Depth, “I take the contract day to day. I’m 100% happy at GH, I love Ron and Frank, but I want to do other things.”
It would be a sad time for General Hospital is Maurice Benard left the show. He has been an iconic character for so long that it is uncertain how the rest of the show that has been built around the mob would hold up in this situation.
Recent General Hospital rumors speculate that Sonny will go to jail for the murder of AJ Quartermaine, and that we will not see Sonny for about six months.
